By law all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. Trust the Triangle. Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the gas registration body in 2009

The main focus of the Register is on improving and maintaining gas safety to the highest standards. We make sure all gas engineers on the Register, over 120,000, are qualified to work with gas.

We work to protect the public from unsafe gas work through a national investigations team tracking down illegal gas workers, regular inspections of Gas Safe registered engineers, educating consumers and raising awareness of gas safety, investigating reports of unsafe gas work.

Each month thousands of contractors and consultants (suppliers) apply for work with public and private sector organisations (buyers). To win work, they must meet the buyer’s health and safety standards.

Assessing supplier’s health and safety competence is usually a lengthy and time consuming process. Suppliers can sometimes meet one buyer’s Health and Safety standards but not another. Being CHAS approved reduces duplication as suppliers compliance is accepted by all CHAS buyers.

CHAS assesses applicants:

Health and safety policy statement, Their organisation for health and safety, Their specific health and safety arrangements to a standard acceptable to our buyers and to others.

Many large organisations use Safe Contractor to reduce risk and to maintain their existing contractor and service provider base, whilst also providing a selection of new, pre-approved contractors

Safe Contractor was initially developed as a bespoke project for a Property Management client, who wished to outsource the annual vetting of contractors on its approved list. Interest shown by other clients identified the potential for a standardised system that could be offered to the whole company’s client base.

REFCOM has been formally named by DEFRA as a Company Certification body. From 4th July 2009 it became a legal requirement for all businesses that install, maintain or service stationary refrigeration, air-conditioning or heat-pump (RAC) equipment that contains or is designed to contain “F gas” refrigerants, to hold a Company Certificate issued by an appointed Company Certification Body. It will be an offence to carry out these activities without a Company Certificate.

Company Certification is a mandatory requirement

Relevant businesses and sole traders must either have an interim or a full Company Certificate in place by July 4th 2009. Interim certificates are valid until July 2011. Full certificates are valid for 3 years from the date of issue.

Founded in 1930, the British Compressed Air Society is the only UK technical trade association open to manufacturers, distributors and end users of compressors, vacuum pumps, pneumatic tools and allied products.

Our role is to provide unbiased advice on legislation, technical standards, education, compliance, safety and environmental matters that affect suppliers and users of compressed air and vacuum systems.

BCAS also has both sector committees, special committees and working groups, which are set up from time to time to address specific issues. The chair of the committee is selected by ballot of the sector committee.
